Ideas for making your music lesson plans fun

If you're a music teacher, the first thing you should do is to ask yourself how you can make learning fun and interesting to your students. You will need a guide to help you every step of the way. If you're new in the teaching field, you need all the help you can get to guarantee your students won't doze off in the middle of your lesson. This is where music lesson plans come in.

Music lesson plans are actually teaching guides. Although there are ready-made plans, it is still a better option to make your own. Not all plans published by other authors are applicable to the kind of students you may have. For instance, the plans are too advanced to your preschoolers or are too complicated to be comprehended by the age group you're teaching. Therefore, making your own music plan is the answer. If you have zero idea on how to make one, here are very basic steps to help you out:

Identify your objectives. Each lesson must have an objective. It is your target, your expectations. It defines exactly what you your students to learn and master at the end of the lesson.

  1. Name your subject matter. Write down what you intend to teach for the day. Is it about the different musical instruments? Are you going to introduce famous composers? In addition, you have to include the materials you'll need as well as the references where you'll base your lesson.
  2. Indicate your learning activities. You have to note the steps you will take in carrying out the lesson. You can start with reviewing the past lesson and checking the assignment.  After which, you can motivate your students in preparation for the new lesson. Follow strictly the strategy you want to use in teaching so you won't get lost in the middle of your lesson.
  3. Evaluate your learners. Make sure to provide lots of exercises for evaluation for you to identify which part of the lesson the students failed to master. The result will help you decide whether to teach the lesson again or proceed with the next one.
  4. Provide assignments. Never mind your students' complaints about having to do their homework. It is for their own good since assignments allow them to review what they've studied for the day.
